The Fritt Ord-supported documentary film Sealers
is about the last seal hunters in Norway. After 200 years of Norwegian sealing, the Government banned the practice in 2015. After that time, there were to be no more subsidies for hunting seals. The film follows Captain Bjørne and his crew on the vessel Havsel on its voyage to the sealing grounds west of Norway, in what may possibly have been Norway's last seal-hunting season.
The film received kudos at the prestigious IDFA Festival in Amsterdam in November and it won the Audience's Award at the Tromsø International Film Festival in January. The film will have a festive première at the Saga Cinema in Oslo on Tuesday, 14 March, at 6 p.m.
After the screening, there will be a meeting with seal hunters and directors Trude Berge Ottersen and Gry Elisabeth Mortensen
The Fritt Ord Foundation provided NOK 250 000 in support for Sealers.
