The Fritt Ord Foundation congratulates Terje Abusdal on winning the prestigious photo competition, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Abusdal won the competition's main category with his photo project "Slash & Burn" about the Norwegian Forest Finns in Hedmark County. The project documents a minority culture that is in the process of disappearing, exploring both the history of the Forest Finns and what it means to be a Forest Finn today.
This is the first time a Norwegian has won the competition, named for the man behind the first Leica camera. First prize consists of EUR 25 000, a Leica camera and a lens.
Fritt Ord has provided funding for the photo project "Slash & Burn". Abusdal is also one of the photographers who participated in the second round of the Norwegian Journal of Photography
. His project was entitled "Summer Long", and documented the local community on the Long Islands in the Oslo Fjord.
